Information you need to know...
Sugar or Rock Maple is in its usual character, and a rather lightly figured blond wood. You have
seen it on the floor of your local gymnasium or bowling alley where it provides a hard smooth floor.
A genetic defect occurs in some trees where the grain turns inwards in small spots creating a different
pattern. This pattern causes an effect like tiny bird's eyes. The beauty of the pattern makes this
type of Maple extremely sought after and valuable.
As a matter of interest, it can be the case that the small number of Birds Eyed trees in a stand
of timber can be worth more than all the other trees put together!
We have included a picture of four Individual Bowls which show the variety of woods connected
with Birds Eye. Some Birds Eye is in a very light almost white wood, some in a darker wood, and there
are dark areas of mineral deposits. As far as we are concerned it is all of the same quality.
This is not plastic, it is wood which has all the evidence of organic and natural growth.
Whenever possible we will match a group of bowls to the best of availability.
