In February of 2005 we launched our website and in the course of its development, which is on-going, we've had time to
reflect on the past 44+ years. While we have accomplished a great deal over the years, we couldn't have
done it without three key ingredients; a dedicated team of craftspeople and sales staff, the understanding that
we need to continually introduce new and exciting products, and you, our valued customers.
Though we do offer a few products manufactured by other companies and craftspeople, the majority of the
products that we sell we make ourselves. Our goal has always been to make things ourselves, and not become
a retailer of imports. We believe "Made in America" is important and for us it goes beyond patriotism. For us,
it means supporting "Middle America." We believe that small businesses like ours are what make the
United States great, and should never be abandoned.
Our Journey
John McLeod was a Scottish engineer who was immigrating to Canada when he fell in love with Vermont, took his
hobby of woodturning and made it his excuse to live in Vermont.
John worked as an individual craftsman for a number of years, perfecting the techniques of the
construction of wooden bowl styles, as well as the presentation of a large number of wooden tableware and
kitchenware items. The business went thru all the traditional stages of borrowed workshops, house basements,
tiny converted gas stations and property purchases followed by five factory extensions.
After requests from a large group of stores and much trial and error, a production turning method was
invented and developed. The traditional skills of the individual craftsman were now allied to the latest
technology.
We use two finishes, one that is a natural oil and the other, for our bowls and many other pieces is a
proprietary finish specially developed for us to give a tough long lasting, hand rubbed lustrous finish.
Our craftspeople are both men and women young and old with the longest serving over 25 years
with the company - we have been producing since 1967.
No other company produces a range of wooden bowls in production quantities to equal that of the Vermont Bowl
Company. Because of our early years of individual craftsmanship, a tradition of quality has been imbued
into the company, and has translated into a reputation for quality which is the envy of the industry.
